grungy and super-hot city

Chinandega sits in the middle of the most extensive plain of volcanic soil in Nicaragua, which some believe to be the most fertile valley in all of Central America. The locals are very welcoming and the city has two pretty churches that act as bookends for the downtown area.

South of Chinandega, Chichigalpa is a bustling agricultural centre that is best known for its Flor de Caña distillery, which produces what many believe to be the finest rum in the world; tour operators in León can arrange guided visits to its vaults.
